The foundation of the story is inspired by the behaviours and interactions of students from a variety of cultural backgrounds. The main character in Encounter is a gentle 'tall poppy'. Jonathon is a gifted 13 year-old by who has spent much of his childhood in boarding schools. Apart from his natural gifts, he discovers he has some paranormal gifts as well. His understanding of the world and his place in it is broadened by a supernatural event which changes his life. Add to that his parents covert activites in which Jonathon becomes inextricably involved leads to a novel of intrigue and suspense.

The story is full of action as it moves from its setting in Culburra Beach on the South Coast of New South Wales to the magnificent Kosciusko National Park, and then across the globe to Istanbul, a city of mystery, colour and vigour.
Kinghorn Rocks (right), Lake Wollumboola, and Culburra Beach all play a part in this thrilling story.
